What exactly is Square Dancing?

Square dancing is a form of folk dance combining a series of “called” movements strung together to make up a dance. Each of these movements is taught by your instructor. The movements can be put together in a myriad of sequences, providing the variety to make the dances interesting and fun.

Is there a dress code?

In short, NO! Casual dress is suitable for club meetings and workshops as you will see at the Open House. This may include slacks, jeans, skirts, etc. Some folks enjoy dressing in traditional square dance fashion, but it is not required. Comfort is key! More folks wear smooth-bottom street shoes than boots. Once you are involved with the dancing, you will be able to find a style of dress that is comfortable and works for you.

Aren't all square dancers old?

Nationwide there is an active youth square dance presence. Locally most active dancers are over 25. They come from all walks of life, all trades, all professions, retired, and still working.

How expensive is it?

Square dancing is very inexpensive compared to most recreational activities. The Cary Cross Trailers Club monthly membership is $12.50 per person or $25 per couple each month. We have four meetings/dances each month, so that is about $3.15 each person for each night of dancing. Compared to the movies, Square Dancing is very inexpensive.

Isn't the music all “twangy” or “hick”?

Today's callers use contemporary upbeat music by country, rock, and pop artists. Classic square dance music is also present. We can dance to any music with a beat.

OK, I'm interested. What next?
